Timber Pest FAQ

Do I need Thermal Camera?

Thermal camera technology has improved a lot in recent years. Used in many types of industry, a Thermal camera is a powerful diagnostic tool that can assist in detecting and diagnosing building defects such as leaks, damp, live termite activity, structural damage, mould & mildew etc. Thermal cameras don’t allow inspectors to ‘see inside walls’, but using heat signatures (minute changes in temperature) the cameras can show concealed building elements such as wall, floor and roof frames, liquid moisture, building insulation quality etc.

A Thermal Camera Inspection is carried out in addition to a standard Building & Pest Inspection for an additional fee of $50.

My property is a unit, do I still need a Pest Inspection?

We recommend it if the property has timber building elements, is a garden unit, ground floor unit, older style unit with suspended flooring, has timber partition walls etc. Termites don’t discriminate between houses and units. They can cause economic or structural damage to any timber elements.

The house is built with a concrete slab. Do I need a Pest Inspection?

Absolutely. A brick veneer concrete slab on ground building is very vulnerable to termite attack. These types of houses have become the normal standard for construction, such as project homes and display homes. Termites can gain access to the building over the slab edge and through the brick walls. We can point out potential issues and locate termites or structural damage. These types of properties should also be inspected on a more regular basis.

The house is only a few years old. Do I still need a Pest Inspection?

We strongly recommend it. Termites can cause significant structural damage in a month or two. New buildings should have a termite protection system however this system may be compromised or have installation defects. Also the termite protection system may have warranty conditions that are not being met by the owner. The pest report will comment on all these issues.

Are Termites a problem in Sydney?

Yes. Sydney is in a HIGH RISK area. Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle  (including most of eastern NSW) are rated by the CSIRO as the second highest risk category for Termites in Australia. Second only to the tropics. This increases the chance for significant structural and economic damage to buildings in Sydney suburbs.
